Facelift (rhytidectomy) is a surgical method to relieve aging of the face by stretching and lifting wrinkles. In recent years, all interventions to facial aging are referred as facial rejuvenation.
Through aging, expose the (facial) skin to solar radiation and other factors like stress, less nutrition, smoking, alcohol and bad eating habits provides skin aging, sagging skin, wrinkles and pigmentation spots. An aged face reveals distinct forehead lines, fallen eyebrows, sagging eyelids and cheeks, under-eye bags and lines, deep lines around lips and nose, lost jaw contour and excessive skin in the neck. The skin lost its vitality, pigmentation spots are formed and the skin became thinner and wrinkled. During facelift surgery, nose and eyelids aesthetics, forehead correction, eyebrow-lifting can be performed to make the face look more beautiful and younger. For fine lines, filler injections (fat, hyaluronic acid, etc.), chemical peeling, laser treatments and botox are preferable. This type of surgery can take 3-10 hours depending on the technique and interventions to be made. It is possible to go home the same day, but it is better to stay overnight in the hospital. Additional procedures (rhinoplasty, eyelid, etc.) can be performed in the same session. There are postoperative scars but they are not obvious because they are hidden in the temporal sides, in the scalp, in front of and behind the ears. If double chin (fat under the chin) is removed, there is a 3-5 mm scar left below the chin. If the eyelid and forehead lifting are added, the scars are left on the eyelids and scalp.
After the surgery
The period after the surgery usually passes comfortably. Generally there may be a swelling and bruising on the face, numbness and tightness feeling. There may be slight asymmetries on the face as the facial nerves may be lightly affected by anesthesia during the surgery. This will be recovered within 3-5 days spontaneously. Head is bandaged except eyes, nose and mouth and cold pads are applied to the cheeks. Silicon pipes called drain can be inserted to prevent the accumulation of blood in the tissues. Drains are taken out within 2 days. The bandages are completely removed after 2-3 days. General control is done. Hair can be washed during this period. If the stitches are not dissolvable, they are removed after 5-7 days.
After the facelift surgery
The results are pleasing if the surgery is done with appropriate technique. Revisions are rarely necessary. Second day after the surgery, the patient can do easy work around home. They can return to work one week after swellings have gone and use make-up. It is recommended to avoid heavy exercises and excessive sunlight for 2 months, and to protect against external impacts. The new shape of the skin on the face and neck lasts for 5-10 years and sometimes a lifetime, depending on the skin structure of the person and the environmental conditions.
