What is Breast Augmentation and how does the procedure work?
Breast augmentation is an aesthetic surgical procedure that uses breast implants or fat transfer to increase the size of your breasts. This process can also be used to re-correct the lost breast volume after weight loss or pregnancy. It can also be used to ensure the natural asymmetry in the breast shape.
Breasts are sexual identities of women. Having small breasts or having breasts removed due to breasts cancer may have a negative effect on the woman’s self confidence and social life. Breast augmentation is one of the most performed plastic surgeries. The most used technique for breast augmentation is with silicone implants. The size and shape of the prosthesis that are used must fit the body proportion of the patient and meet her expectations.
There are four incisions for prosthesis placement: under breasts, around the nipple, under the arm and belly button. The most chosen incision is under the breasts. Every technique has its own advantages and disadvantages. The placement of the silicone under the breasts is the most suitable technique for every silicone prosthesis type and for the placing method like sub-muscular or sub-glandular. The advantage of placement via the under arm is that there is no scar on the breasts. The disadvantage is that by this method the anatomic silicone (drop shape) and silicone (round shape) prosthesis cannot be placed correctly which has a negative effect on the result. Where the prosthesis is placed varies and depends on breast tissue and skin quality. Sub-muscular method is more preferable when upper breast tissue is thinner than 2 cm. If there is enough tissue density, sub-glandular method may be preferred. But it is known that even though sub-glandular method is less painful and easier for the patient to recover, there is a chance that the patient feels the prosthesis.
Recent studies have suggested a new technique combining sub-muscular and sub-glandular methods to acquire the best results. This technique called “dual plane”. This method is very popular because it ensures that the patient feels less of the prosthesis. The skin feels more natural with this technique. For the best result during my own operations, I perform the dual plane technique. I use as prosthesis “MENTOR” brand that have a lifetime guarantee, anatomic (drop shape), round shape silicone or textured.
Surgery procedure Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation surgeries are done under general anesthesia and last for 2 hours. The patient will have drains and bandages after the operation. The patient stay overnight in the hospital, the next day the drains will be removed and the patient can go home. The patient needs to use a special bra for about 3 weeks day and night and avoid physical touch.
The special bandage on the stitches will be removed two weeks after the surgery. Post operation complications could be hematoma, infection, incision problems, formation of capsule, dislocation of prosthesis or prosthesis break. All patients can experience formation of the capsule. This is a response of the body to a strange object. If this situation takes to long, it may cause pain and shape defects. At this case we do a revision surgery. To prevent all these consequences, we suggest starting massaging the area after the 1st week of the surgery until the 5th.
